Calculus Textbook Consideration

Considerations

Assessment of Active Calculus

Kelly Bubp, who used the book in Spring 2018 and Fall 2018, says "... I endorse the book 100%. This does not mean that I do everything exactly as the book does it, but that overall, I believe the book supports an optimal, research-based, learning environment for students."

The more detailed assesment below is by Martin Mohlenkamp, based on his usage in Fall 2018 (syllabus).

Format

The primary access is an online html version. (There is a pdf version and printed version but few students use them.)

General comment: Whether we switch to this book or not, these format features are "The Future" for lower-level textbooks.

Online Homework

General comment: The ecosystem for online homework systems is in great flux. Not being attached to a particular system would allow us to try options and switch more easily.

APEX Calculus website AIM approved says about 20 Dimensions 8.5"x11"x0.8" times 3; approximately 900 pages total. $14 x 3 volumes black and white softcover html uses same "very accessible" platform as Active WeBWork problems integrated in html (grades not recorded). We could do our own WeBWork. see approximate mapping parametric, polar, vector operations are in volume 3 version 4.0 seems to have what's needed. Martin has hard copies.
Active Calculus website AIM approved website lists places with the most downloads of the pdf version. I found syllabuses list it from St. Mary's College of Maryland, Washington State University, Westminster College, Sonoma State University, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Goucher College, etc.
  • Main (single variable) 2017 book has (enhanced) html version (which works well on phones) and pdf version. There are also pdf workbooks for Chapters 1-4 and 5-8.
  • Multivariable 2017 book has pdf
single-variable html version "... accessible to most students 'as-is' with the use of technology we provide. Overall I would support this as a very accessible choice that would require little, if any, adaptation for our students." WeBWork problems integrated in html (grades not recorded). We could do our own WeBWork. Lacks Rolle's, MVT, (hyperbolics), Newton's method; see approximate mapping Vector stuff in multivariable book chapter 9; parametric and polar in multivariate book chapter 11 Lacks line integrals, surface integrals, conservative fields, curl, divergence, Green's theorem, Divergence theorem, Stokes's theorem. activity based; few(er) exercises. Martin has hard copies.
Ximera website OSU MOOC No Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III html mixed. Uses MathJax but I couldn't get to the accessible code within solution buttons. Kind of is a homework system. I could see the solutions to fill-in question by accessing the TeX code through MathJax. probably TAGS probably TAGS probably TAGS Is designed for independent, online work, not for use in an in-person class.
